Character Recipe
Objective: You will demonstrate your understanding of a character by “creating” them in a recipe form.
Imagine that you were to cook up that character. What makes up that person?
Preparation Tips:
Prewriting
1. Select a character from the literary work you are currently devouring.
2. List character traits and descriptions as they appear in the novel, short story, biography, etc.
3. Determine and list events or forces that they believe helped shape the character.
4. Look at a few samples to see how they are written.
Writing
Create a recipe that the author might have used to develop the character they have selected. Baste
themselves in creative juices every so often.
Revising
Stir. Add ingredients. Check to make sure preparation instructions are clear and in logical order.
Proofreading
Check spelling, abbreviations for measurements, and that preparation instructions are delivered using
imperative sentences (if you don’t know what one is, find out!).
Here’s a couple of examples:
SAMPLE STUDENT RECIPE
Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games)
Ingredients:
2 cups Hope
4 Tablespoons Romance
3 teaspoons Mystery
1 cup Sadness
1 1/2 cups Pain
6 tablespoons Fighting Skill
Directions
Gather all ingredients. Star Mystery and mix Romance into it (make sure to evenly coat the romance throughout). Beat until mixed. Take Pain and Fighting Skill and heat to a boil. Pour into mixture. Stir Sadness deep into the bottom of it and sprinkle the 2 cups of Hope on top. Bake for 142 minutes. Make sure to set the oven at 600 degrees for extra climax action.
Preparation Time: 142 minutes
Serves: 1 1/2 people, Gale Hawthorne and Peeta Mellark. Never quite enough for both but too much for one.
Potter Bread
1 ordinary baby boy
1 T curse
1/7 c extra soul from evil wizard
4 c magic
2 c courage
4 tsp neglect
1 c protection by loving sacrifice
3 c dumb luck
2 c great friends
1 pint mischievousness
1 broomstick
5 golden sniches
1 T hatred of Professor Snape
1 good Hogwarts education
1 c compassion
1 invisibility cloak
Start with average baby. Add curse, extra soul, magic, courage, neglect, and protection by loving sacrifice. Mix thoroughly and let rise till 11 years old. Punch down periodically and knead in dumb luck, great friends, mischievousness and stir well with broomstick. Sprinkle with gold snitches to taste. Flatten out dough and shape into a loaf with compassion in the center. Roll loaf in hatred of Professor Snape and a good Hogwarts education. Place in pan and top with invisibility cloak. Bake with lightning bolt.

Serves: death of an evil wizard
Pony Boy Pizza
1/2 c school smarts
3 T sunset (West Side brand)
1 c terror
5 c fountain water (preferably from a park)
2 1/2 c powdered far
3 drops blood red food coloring
2 c grated cherry
1/2 c smoked Johnny (optional)
7 T crushed car juice
Directions: Prehead oven to 800 degrees. Mix together school smarts, terror, water from fountain, and blood red food coloring vigorously until bursting point. Then in a separate bowl mix sunset and powdered faear lightly. Add together and knead. Roll out smoothly on a pan. Spead crucshed car juice on the dough. Sprinkle with grated cherry. Add smoked Johnny on top if desired.
Preparation time: one year
Serves: one gang
Snape Lemonade
2 vials potion
1 c Slytherin
1 fresh black cloak
1 c sour juice
2 c serving Voldemort
3/4 c guilt (preferred: just killed Dumbledore style)
3 T wand and magic
1 tear of memories
8 c love for Lily
Combine 1 c Slytherin in 2 vials of potion. Mix with Black cloak until dissolved. Stick in blender along with Want and magic. Then heat 2 c of serving Voldemort until liquefied. Next add 3/4 c guilt (try not to cry, tends to spoil). Dump in sour juice. Mix tear of memories and love for Lily together, then pour into blender. Once everything is blended, pour into a cup and drink.
Preparation time: 29 years at -38 degrees
Serves: nobody
